2. The news in detail
Puerto del Rosario town council is strengthening its commitment to residents' wellbeing by signing collaboration agreements with four social organisations based in the municipality. The agreements fund projects for people with mental-health problems, cancer patients and people living with dementia, backing the work of the third sector and building a support network that is close at hand, specialised and shaped around real needs.
Among the projects supported is 'Metamorfosis', run by the ASOMASAMEN association: an individualised, comprehensive therapeutic support programme that provides continuity of care for people with mental-health problems and promotes their personal autonomy, self-determination and full social inclusion.
The council is also backing 'MOVVIDA: Movement and Life for the Cancer Patients of Fuerteventura', promoted by the FuerteYoga association. The initiative sets up a structured circuit of individually tailored physical exercise, therapeutic yoga and mindfulness for people undergoing active cancer treatment, helping to improve their physical and emotional wellbeing during the illness.
Funding also goes to the 'Oncology Wigs Project – Puerto del Rosario' of the Metastatic Breast Cancer Association, which makes oncology wigs available as a resource that supports the emotional wellbeing, self-esteem and quality of life of people affected by cancer and of their families in Fuerteventura.
Finally, the agreement with the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Patients of Fuerteventura (AFFA) underpins the 'Retales de la Memoria' programme, which offers comprehensive, continuous, quality care to people with dementia in Puerto del Rosario, promoting their functional, relational and cognitive autonomy while supporting families and carers.
With these agreements the governing group recognises social organisations as strategic allies and consolidates a stable line of collaboration between the administration and the third sector.
3. Voices and statements
“These agreements are proof of this council's firm commitment to people, especially those going through situations of greater vulnerability. We believe in an administration that stays close and works hand in hand with local associations to drive projects that generate wellbeing, inclusion and a better quality of life for our residents.”
— David de Vera, mayor of Puerto del Rosario. Public health councillor Rosa Rodríguez added that “health promotion must be approached from a comprehensive perspective, supporting initiatives that complement healthcare and focus on accompaniment, prevention and emotional wellbeing”.
4. Context and background
The agreements were formalised by Puerto del Rosario town council and announced on Friday 10 July 2026. The four programmes run through 2026 across the municipality, benefiting users and families from all over Fuerteventura.
5. What it means for Fuerteventura
As the island's administrative capital, Puerto del Rosario hosts health and social services used by residents from all over Fuerteventura, so public support for mental health, cancer care and dementia reaches well beyond the city itself.
