Fuerteventura Avanza asks Cabildo to modernise bus fare payments
1. Key points
The group asks the Cabildo to work with the operator to enable electronic payments.
Councillor Erika Ania says it is hard to justify cash-only tickets in 2026 for passengers without a travel pass.
The request points to the Island Transport and Sustainable Mobility Plan 2023-2026 and service digitalisation.
The aim is not to remove travel passes or cash, but to add payment options.
2. The news in detail
Fuerteventura Avanza has asked the Cabildo of Fuerteventura to take a further step in modernising public transport and to work with the current operator so tickets can be paid directly by bank card, mobile phone and other electronic systems.
Councillor Erika Ania, of Fuerteventura Avanza on Puerto del Rosario Town Council, says it is hard to understand that in 2026 a passenger boarding a guagua without a travel pass still depends on cash. The group argues this especially affects occasional users, young people and visitors who may not know the island's payment system in advance.
It also notes that the Island Transport and Sustainable Mobility Plan of Fuerteventura 2023-2026 recognises limited modernisation of the service and sets digitalisation as a goal. Ania says updating payment systems should form part of that process, including ahead of the future concession for regular passenger public transport.
3. Voices and statements
«We are not asking to scrap travel passes or cash. We are asking to add options. Anyone who wants to use a pass should still be able to; anyone who wants to pay cash too; and anyone who only has a card or a phone should be able to board a guagua without hitting a problem that is entirely avoidable today», says Erika Ania.
4. Context and background
Press note: Puerto del Rosario, 9 August 2026.
Request addressed to: Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the public-transport operator.
5. What it means for Fuerteventura
Modernising guagua payments sits within the wider debate on Fuerteventura's public transport, covering fleet renewal, frequencies and the digitalisation set out in the island mobility plan.
