Summer 2026: 19 drowning deaths in Canarias aquatic spaces
1. Key points
The 19 June–9 September window leaves 19 immersion fatalities; July was the year’s hardest month with eight deaths.
By island: Tenerife 6, Lanzarote 5, Fuerteventura 4, Gran Canaria 3 and La Palma 1.
Altogether 78 aquatic accidents; 17 minors were involved, five of them fatally.
2. The news in detail
The Canarias, 1500 Km de Costa association has released its close of the 2026 school-holiday season and puts at nineteen the number of people who died by drowning on beaches and aquatic facilities across the Archipelago. The window runs from 19 June, when term ended, to 9 September, when classes resumed.
July and August alone recorded fourteen immersion deaths — two more than the same stretch in 2025. The January–August average sits around six fatalities a month; July concentrated eight deaths — the year’s peak — and August six. Of the summer total, one case fell in late June and four in the first days of September.
The overall count lists seventy-eight people involved in incidents: beyond the fatalities there were three bathers in critical condition, seventeen seriously hurt, fifteen moderate, eleven slight and thirteen rescued unharmed. Nearly one in five of those affected, and four of the dead, were caught on the coast while adverse-weather pre-alerts were active. Seventeen minors appear in the tally (five dead, seven serious, three moderate and two unhurt); eight cases on Gran Canaria, seven on Lanzarote and two on Fuerteventura, split across beaches, the coastal strip and pools.
3. Voices and statements
The campaign stresses that coastal vigilance cannot drop when swell or wind alerts are in force.
4. Context and background
The press note is dated Canarias, Friday 18 September 2026, and covers the whole Archipelago, with Fuerteventura among the islands reporting fatal victims.
5. What it means for Fuerteventura
The drive is backed by Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Museo Elder and several Canarias government departments. More local coverage on Fuerteventura TV.
