Betancuria Fuerteventura Downhill
Downhill race through Betancuria, Fuerteventura
A fantastic downhill race filmed on the winding roads of Betancuria, in the mountainous heart of Fuerteventura.
Betancuria is the oldest town in the Canary Islands and was once the historic capital of Fuerteventura, founded in 1404 by the Norman conqueror Jean de Béthencourt, who chose this sheltered inland valley for protection. Today it is one of the island's smallest and most peaceful municipalities, ringed by volcanic mountains and dotted with whitewashed houses, the church of Santa María and old hermitages.
Those same mountains give Betancuria its dramatic, twisting roads and sweeping viewpoints, the perfect backdrop for a downhill run. Beyond the adrenaline, the area rewards a slower visit too: historic architecture, craft workshops and panoramic miradores looking out over the barren, beautiful interior of the island.
