Diving and snorkelling at Isla de Lobos, near Corralejo
Just off the north coast of Fuerteventura, a short hop from Corralejo, lies Isla de Lobos — a tiny volcanic islet with some of the clearest water in the Canary Islands. It is a favourite spot for snorkelling and diving, and an easy day trip from the island's lively northern resort.
A protected volcanic paradise
Isla de Lobos is a small nature reserve of roughly 4.6 km², part of a UNESCO-recognised biosphere. Because it is protected, the number of daily visitors is limited: to set foot on the island you need a free online permit (the "Lobos Pass"), which grants access for a set time slot. It is worth arranging this in advance, especially in the busy months, so your trip goes smoothly.
What you will see underwater
The sheltered lagoon at Puertito de Lobos is shallow, calm and wonderfully clear, ideal for snorkelling straight from the shore. Divers and snorkellers here are often amazed by the amount of fish and the marine life that thrive in these waters — a real highlight for anyone who loves the sea. Bring your own mask and fins, or join a boat trip that provides the gear.
How to get there
The islet is reached from Puerto de Corralejo by ferry or water taxi in around 10 to 20 minutes. Several operators run the short crossing throughout the day. If you would rather not organise a permit, catamaran and snorkelling excursions from Corralejo sail around Lobos and stop to swim, often including snorkelling equipment, paddleboards and kayaks on board.
