Fuerteventura rewards travellers who take the time to explore it. An island of wide-open landscapes
The second-largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is famous for its raw, desert-like beauty: long sandy beaches, low volcanic hills, and some of the cleanest air and clearest light in the archipelago. The north around Corralejo and its dune-filled natural park is lively and popular, while the Jandía peninsula in the south hides kilometre after kilometre of quieter sand. In between lie whitewashed inland villages and viewpoints worth the detour.
Getting the most from your trip
A few simple tips go a long way here. The best beaches and viewpoints are spread out, so hiring a car makes exploring far easier. It is a windy island, which is a blessing for kitesurfers and windsurfers but worth planning around if you want a calm beach day — the sheltered coves change with the wind, so it pays to be flexible. The weather is mild all year, so there is no single "best" season; whenever you come, pack sun protection and something for the breeze.
