Flights and airport in Fuerteventura: how to get to the island

Fuerteventura is one of the most popular holiday islands in the Canaries, loved by families, couples, groups of friends and, above all, by surfers drawn to its mild weather and year-round water-sports scene. Getting here is easy: the island's airport is well connected across Europe and to the rest of the Canary Islands. Here is what you need to know to plan your journey.

Fuerteventura Airport (FUE)

All flights land at Fuerteventura Airport (IATA code FUE), in El Matorral, about 5 km south of the capital Puerto del Rosario. It is a single, modern terminal that handles both international and inter-island traffic, so arrivals and departures are simple and rarely stressful. Car-hire desks, taxis, a bus stop, cafes and shops are all a short walk from the arrivals hall.

Where you can fly from

Fuerteventura has direct connections to dozens of European cities across many airlines. Some of the most frequent routes are from Spanish hubs such as Madrid and Barcelona, and from the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. Low-cost carriers including Ryanair and easyJet operate here alongside full-service and holiday airlines such as Vueling, Jet2 and TUI, so there is usually a good choice of flights year-round, with more options in the busy winter and summer seasons. Exact routes and schedules change from season to season, so it is always worth comparing a few airlines when you book.

Getting between the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are well connected to one another by air. It is quick and easy to hop from Fuerteventura to Gran Canaria, Tenerife or the other islands with the regional airlines Binter Canarias and Canaryfly, which run short flights several times a day. This makes it simple to combine Fuerteventura with a visit to a neighbouring island, or to connect onwards to mainland Spain.

From the airport to your resort

The airport sits in the middle of the island, so most destinations are within an easy drive:

• Puerto del Rosario (the capital): about 10 minutes.
• Caleta de Fuste: roughly 10 minutes, the closest resort.
• Corralejo in the north: about 35 to 40 minutes.
• Costa Calma and Morro Jable in the south: around one to one and a half hours.

You have several ways to make the trip:

• Hire car: the most flexible option, and ideal for exploring an island where the best beaches are spread out. All major companies have desks at the airport.
• Public bus (Tiadhe): inexpensive lines connect the airport with Puerto del Rosario in a few minutes and run to Corralejo and other towns; buy your ticket from the driver. It is the budget-friendly choice if you are not in a hurry.
• Taxi or private transfer: taxis wait outside arrivals, and pre-booked transfers are convenient if you are travelling as a group or arriving late.
