The Emilio Rivero Chair brings Canarian wrestling to Fuerteventura's youth through the school contest What is Canarian wrestling to you
2. The news in detail
The Emilio Rivero Chair of Canarian Wrestling held in Fuerteventura the awards ceremony of the school contest What is Canarian wrestling to you, an initiative aimed at bringing this traditional sport closer to the educational community from a cultural, identity and heritage perspective.
In this first edition, four secondary schools on the island took part, including two in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, with a total of 20 entries submitted and around 65 students involved. The contest invited students to reflect on the importance of Canarian wrestling as a symbol of the identity and heritage of the Canary Islands, while also promoting knowledge of the traditions and values linked to this native sport.
The councillor for Sport of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Luis Gonzalez, thanked the Emilio Rivero Chair for its commitment to developing this kind of educational and cultural initiative on the island, while highlighting the growing interest of young people in native sports and traditional games, especially Canarian wrestling.
Puerto del Rosario Town Hall underlines the importance of promoting actions that foster cultural roots, the transmission of heritage and a stronger sense of belonging among young people, while helping to preserve and spread the identity markers of the Canarian people.
3. Voices and statements
The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, stressed that this kind of project helps keep alive a cultural legacy that is part of the history of the Canary Islands and contributes to awakening among the youngest respect and pride for our roots. For his part, the councillor for Historical Heritage, David de Leon, emphasised that Canarian wrestling is part of our identity as a people and that it is essential for young people to know, understand and value the traditions that define us as a society.
4. Context and background
Canarian wrestling is one of the most representative native sports of the archipelago, with centuries of history and deep roots across the islands. In Fuerteventura it relies on a solid network of clubs and terreros (wrestling grounds) that keep this tradition alive across generations. The Emilio Rivero Chair of Canarian Wrestling works on the research, outreach and promotion of this sport and, through this school contest, seeks to build a bridge between wrestling and new generations from the educational sphere.
