25 real capabilities, grouped by area — the full depth of what Stripe Tax Calculator does.
In-store tax preview
- Tax shown before checkout — displays an automatic IGIC / VAT estimate right in your storefront, so EU and Canary Islands buyers see the tax early instead of being surprised at the final step.
- One attribute to opt an element in — decorates any element carrying a
data-stripe-price(in cents) that sits inside your chosen product container; add the attribute and the preview appears. - Reads price and currency per element — picks up
data-stripe-priceand an optionaldata-stripe-currency, and formats the amount in the visitor's own locale. - Clear "tax included" line — adds a small, unobtrusive sub-line such as "Of which €X IGIC included", and never doubles up if one is already present.
- Frontend-only, HTML-only — the preview is injected only on site-facing HTML pages, just before
</body>, so admin screens and non-HTML responses are left untouched.
Correct Spanish & EU tax logic
- Canary Islands IGIC — Spanish postal codes starting 35 (Las Palmas) or 38 (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) are correctly treated as IGIC, not mainland IVA.
- Mainland Spain IVA — other Spanish destinations get the mainland VAT rate.
- EU-wide VAT — a built-in list of all 27 EU member states receives the EU default rate; everywhere else is treated as no tax.
- Tax-inclusive maths — treats the shown price as gross and back-calculates the tax and net portions, matching how inclusive pricing is displayed.
- Clean rate labels — percentages render tidily (trailing zeros dropped), e.g. "IGIC 7%", "IVA 21%", "VAT 21%".
Buyer detection & endpoint
- Automatic buyer geolocation — optionally detects the visitor's country and postal code by IP (via
ipapi.co) so the right rate shows without asking, and falls back gracefully if the lookup fails. - Works with or without geo — geolocation can be turned off; the tax endpoint still answers for an explicit country / postal code.
- Clean JSON endpoint — a
com_ajaxendpoint returns tax amount, label, net, total, currency and rate as JSON, so the preview stays fast and self-contained. - Safe input handling — country, postal code, amount and currency are read through Joomla's filtered Input (no raw superglobals) and the amount is validated before any calculation.
Admin configuration
- Configure entirely from Joomla admin — no code: toggle geolocation and set the target CSS class from the plugin's Basic tab.
- Editable rates — IGIC, mainland IVA and the EU default VAT are all editable percentage fields, so you keep control of the figures shown.
- Target only what you choose — a single CSS-class setting scopes exactly which elements get a preview, so unrelated prices are left alone.
Reliability & honest scope
- Never breaks the page — both the injection and the AJAX endpoint are wrapped so a failure can never take the site down; the client script fails silently rather than showing errors.
- Dependency-free — the injected helper is small vanilla JavaScript using
fetch, with no libraries to load. - A preview, not a replacement — it shows an early estimate; the actual tax collection and remittance stay with Stripe Tax at checkout, exactly as today.
- Test before go-live — because the estimate mirrors your own Stripe Tax setup, confirm it against a few amounts and countries in Stripe test mode before enabling it on live traffic.
Licensing & updates
- Licensed one-click updates — checks the GMC / FuerteventuraTV update server about every 24 h and offers new versions under System → Update → Extensions once your Download Key is in place.
- Download Key support — the manifest declares a
dlidfield, so Joomla shows the licence key and licensed updates keep flowing. - Trilingual admin — full English, Italian and Spanish admin translations.
- GPL and lean —
plg_system_stripetaxcalcunder GPL-2.0-or-later, requiring Joomla 5.1+/6.x and PHP 8.1+, with no separate tax engine to maintain.
Frequently asked questions
-
How do I install it?
Follow the step-by-step installation guide above. For Joomla you upload the package under System → Install → Extensions; for WordPress under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. It takes under a minute.
-
How do I get updates?
Updates are automatic. Once installed, the extension/plugin checks our update server on its own (Joomla every 24 h, WordPress every 12 h) and offers the new version in the standard updates screen, as long as your licence is active. You can also re-download the latest build from your account at any time.
-
Which versions are supported?
Joomla products run on Joomla 5.x and 6.x with PHP 8.1+. WordPress products run on WordPress 6.0+ with PHP 8.1+.

Is it available in my language?
Yes — every product ships with English, Italian and Spanish out of the box, and respects your site’s multilingual setup.
